Beaches in Chania

Some of the features that make the prefecture of Chania (Hania) a very popular vacation spot are its spectacular beaches and the small islands located off its coast. The variety and extent of Crete's coastline make it possible for bathers to enjoy an infinite number of different places to swim, all of them lapped by warm, crystal clear water. These beaches satisfy all types of visitors, whether they prefer crowded sandy stretches or secluded coves. Many of the beaches are located on the northern coast of Crete and on the southern one. Below is a list of some beaches that we recommended:

Agia Marina Beach

Agia Marina Beach is located to 10 Km away from Chania city on the road from Chania to Kissamos and one can visit it by bus or a car. Agia Marina is greatly a tourist resort, a long sandy beach that gets busy with visitors who are mainly on package tours. There are several beach bars here and they attract a lot of people. Be careful when the sea gets rough and follow the instructions of the lifesavers.

Agioi Apostoloi Beach

Agioi Apostoloi beach is located to 7 Km west from Chania. This is an organized and touristy beach surrounded by many hotels and restaurants. This beach is not recommended because of their natural beauty, but because of the crowd that visits it, especially on July and August. On this beach one can find many water sports or relax and enjoy the Greek sun in one of the many beach bars.

Golden Beach

Golden Beach is located at a walking distance from the city of Chania and features plenty of accommodations which are surrounding it. Golden Beach comprises in three soft sandy beaches with clear and shallow waters especially safe for children. One of the beaches has a children play area and all have many touristy facilities such as umbrellas and sun beds rentals and sea sports.

Elafonissos Beach

Elafonissos Beach is located on the southwest of Crete; it is one of the prettiest beaches in Crete. Its distance from the town of Chania is almost 80 km, so one must take the bus or a car in order to see it. Alternatively one can reach Elafonissos by taking one of the little boats that leave from Paleochora. Elafonissos is a beach with very thin, white sand and shallow waters. This is the time to enjoy the place. Wait until the sunset and have your camera loaded and ready.

Kalyves Beach

Kalyves Beach is a nice sandy beach worth a visit, located about 20 kilometres east of Chania in the village of the same name, one of the greenest areas of Greece, from where the shadow of the White Mountains can be seen. There the visitors will find a friendly and authentic atmosphere and a good choice of small taverns, accommodations and bars.

Falassarna Beach

Falassarna beach is a long and amazing sandy beach with wonderful sunsets, located on the west end of Crete about 17 km far from Kissamos. It has pure and soft golden sands and incredible clean and turquoise waters for this reason Falassarna has been awarded as the best beach of Greece and Europe. It is truly an idyllic and quiet place but it is better avoiding it during windy days. So, it is worth the try to take the bus and visit this beautiful white sand beach.

Pahia Ammos

Pahia Ammos is located on the southern coast of Crete, a few kilometres away from Paleochora. It is one of the most lovely sandy beaches of Crete and has been awarded for the cleanliness of its waters by the EU Blue Flag (lifesavers are available). It features umbrellas and sun beds rentals and the possibility to do several water sports.

Glyka Chania

Glyka Nera is located between Sfakia and Loutro, on the southern coast of Crete, separated from both villages by a one hour walk. Its name Glyka Nera means Sweet Water; the beach is called like this because when someone digs a hole in the sand, sweet water appears from the ground. The beach is very beautiful and the water is clear and pure. Nudism and camping are allowed.

Paleochora Beach

Paleochora Beach is located in front of the village of the same name; it is a wonderful beach with many tourists during the summer and has golden sand and crystal clear waters. It is often windy so it is an ideal place for windsurfing or kite surfing. Umbrellas and sun beds can be rented. One can reach Paleochora either by bus or by car (the distance from the city of Chania is approximately 70 km).

Georgioupolis is an exceptionally great beach, as it is almost 10 km wide. Along the beach there are located a great number of hotels and rooms for rent, which make the beach full of crowd during the summer. One can visit Georgioupolis by taking the bus or by renting a car.
