The City of Rhodes

The city of Rhodes is the biggest village and capital city of the island of the same name, located on the northern tip of the island. It is well-known as the former site of the Colossus (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world). It is divided into two parts: the Old City, or medieval, and the New City.

The old city of Rhodes is a living settlement of some 150 acres (including the walls and the moat) with a population of approximately 6000 who live and work in the same constructions that were used by the Knights of St. John 500 years ago. At the end of the 5th century the three ancient cities of the island of Rhodes united to form a forth. The new settlement flourished as a focus of Hellenistic culture. The principal architectural influence is from the period of the Knights ( 1309 - 1522 ) Who reconstructed the exciting ramparts to better fortify the tow against the Turks. Away from the history, even today the Old City on a warm balmy night can awoke the feeling of the Medieval Crusader Knights who constructed these constructions. A tour of the medieval city is quite a lengthy business, given the number of monuments there are to see. The walls with their bastions, battlements, towers, gates cause one to gasp in wonder. The imposing constructions, with their coats-of-arms, majestic gateways, decoration in relief, Gothic windows, paved courtyards and old lamps take one centuries back in time, as do the narrow streets and old churches. As a living monument to the past it is unique in Europe, if not the world.

The New City is not all that new, but it has a cosmopolitan character. When the Greeks who did not leave Rhodes with the Knights in 1522 were ejected of the old city and its protective walls they constructed new neighborhoods in the south called Marasia. They were linked by people who came from other islands and countries who settled in the northern coast of the island. This was called Neohori, or New City. In the New City you will feel like you are in a real modern city instead of a walled medieval fortress. Much of it was erected by the Italians when they took it from the disintegrating Ottoman empire, there are stores, traffic lights, mansions, hotels that look like apartment buildings and plenty of cars and motorbikes. It is also remarkably clean and well-cared for, much more so than other Greek cities.
