The Old City of Chania is located right above the old harbor. It is worthwhile visiting the old town and its beautiful walkways (little streets only for pedestrians), where you can find many kinds of shops: from little shops that sell handmade cretan things, to restaurants with live music and very nice rooms for renting with exceptional sight of the old harbor. In spite of being heavily bombed during World War II, Chania's Old City is considered the loveliest urban region on Crete, especially the old Venetian harbor, it is probably the most well known spot in the city of Chania. The Venetian lighthouse on the entrance of the harbor is the trademark of Chania. So, do not forget to visit the old harbor. The borders of the Old City are the mostly destroyed old Venetian wall (and bulwarks) and this has been the support of all the civilizations which were developed in the area. The central part of the old city is named Kasteli and has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Today it is a little quieter than the neighboring areas of the west part of the region. The Splantzia quarter (next to the east part of Kasteli) is also largely untouched and very atmospheric. A plan for its future development is now being under consideration.
The main square of the Old City is the Eleftherios Venizelos Square. It is the center of the touristic activities in the area. Adjacent to this (on the west side) is located the Topanas region, which used to be the Christian zone of the city during the Turkish domination. Its name derive from the Venetian bullets warehouse (Top-Hane in Turkish), which was located there. The Jewish quarter ("Evraiki" or "Ovraiki") was situated at the north-west of the Old City, behind the harbor and inside the borders of Topanas. The entire Topanas area is generally very attractive, with many narrow alleys and old charming buildings, some of which have been renovated as hotels, restaurants, shops and bars. This makes it an animated and colorful spot especially during the warm period (April-October). In the winter, it still remains a center of activities (especially for nightlife) but in a more quiet and atmospheric way.
