The City of Corfu

The city of Corfu or Kerkyra is the capital and main city of the island and prefecture of Corfu. The City is a combination of the cosmopolitan and the traditional, considered as one of the most beautiful cities in Greece due to the heavy influence of the Venetians who for centuries controlled the island. Also it has become known as a Kastropolis (Castle City) because of its multiple castles. There is plenty to draw visitors to this magical island. It is divided into the Old and New city and it is the administrative center of the island.

New city is cheerful and cosmopolitan, offering an exciting conglomeration of Greek, Italian, French and British influences while the old city was laid out by the Venetians in the 14th century and features narrow alleys lined with multi-storeyed pastel-coloured buildings with red tiled roofs, creating a scene reminiscent of Italy. Meeting the old city can be a unique experience. The Venetian architecture has stigmatized the feature of the Old City. The residences saved till our days were built during the Venetian period and have uniformity in their construction. Characteristics of these buildings are the rhythmic order of the windows, the grandiose entrances (portonia) and the frames. All buildings have the famous Volta or arcs in the ground floor that make spacious arcades and protect people from rain.

Every visitor according to his tastes will discover several reasons to worship her. Corfu lives in vivid rhythms. You will find it out early in the morning when you walk around the streets of the city. The lots of shops and good-hearted residents that can't stop talking with this characteristic singing voice, will give you their cheer and liveliness. Later on you can have your meal in the restaurants and taverns of the city where you can taste delicious recipes of eptanisian cuisine. You will drink the delicious local wine and tsitsibira. Visit Corfu and live the holidays of your dreams in the land of hospitable Feakes.
